County Wide Multi-Use Trail Committee
After the adoption of the Manistee County Wide Park and Recreation Plan a County Wide Multi-Use Trail Committee was formed to facilitate the development and placement of trails spanning across all communities within Manistee County. The City of Manistee Non-Motorized Transportation Committee had the same goals to develop connectivity of the trails within the City to neighboring jurisdictions as the County-Wide Multi-Use Trail Committee and recognized the need for all the municipalities in the county to work together to consolidate efforts and resources. At the request of the Non-Motorized Transportation Committee City Council City Council Repealed Chapter 263 Non-Motorized Transportation Committee on November 1, 2016.
Information about the County Wide Multi-Use Trail Committee is located on the Manistee County Planning Department webpage under Recreation Plan.
Manistee Non-Motorized Trail Park
In 1943 the site of the Manistee Non-Motorized Trail Park was originally optioned by the City from the State for construction of an airport. This is a 173 acre parcel east of the City on State Highway 55 (M-55). When the Manistee Blacker Airport was built on US 31 the Attorney General ruled that the property should be dedicated to public purposes. In 1991 City Council determined the property should be preserved for public recreation purposes.
Since 2010 the City of Manistee Non-Motorized Transportation Committee and the Shoreline cycling Club have been developing a plan to build multi-use trails and a mountain bike skills park on this parcel. April 2011 the Manistee City Council unanimously approves the trail plan and development of the trails is set to begin the spring of 2011. This is a four season City of Manistee Park for Mountain Biking, Walking, Running and Cross Country Skiing. On October 18, 2016 City Council entered into a Maintenance Agreement with Shoreline Cycling Club to continue the development, maintenance and oversight of the Manistee Non-Motorized Trail Park.
